The War Pauses

Story: The Hour of the Wolf
Written By: J. Michael Straczynski
Season: 4

Following from the events of the Season 3 finale, the folks of B5 find themselves slightly lost, two are definitively lost. After Sheridan blew up the Shadow's city, the Shadows retreated and most likely regrouping from their losses. The war takes a pause, but is sure to start up again, which is why Ivanova, Delenn, and G'Kar are trying to convince the others in the alliance to not leave and continue to give their help, possibly even strike now to further cripple the Shadows. But the others want to return to their planets and build up their own defenses. The alliance is less cohesive without Sheridan, who is presumed dead.
With both Sheridan and Garibaldi lost...Ivanova is having trouble dealing with all the station's problems and in trying to keep together the alliance. Delenn is personally fed up with this new Kosh, who hasn't been helping or showing up to meetings, she confronts him, and with Lyta he pretty says "fuck it".

But Lyta is more willing to help, and she believes that with she and Sheridan both having a connection with the original Kosh, that she could briefly hold back the Shadows and connect with him on Z'ha'dum, if he is still alive. Lyta, Ivanova, and Delenn take a White Star and go out to search.

G'Kar is a little worried that everyone is so focused on the loss of Sheridan, that not too many people are thinking about the lost Garibaldi. After a conversation with Zach about their lost friend, G'Kar decides that he is going to head out in search of Garibaldi, who we last saw in a starfury being taken somewhere by a Shadow ship.

Then we have Londo, who has taken on his new position in Centauri Prime, only to find that this young Emperor has reconnected the Centauri with the Shadows and is completely crazy (like thinks he is going to be a god/keeps several Centauri heads in a room crazy). He also sees the burnt and scarred Mr. Morden, who is now on Centauri Prime. Londo even experiences one of the moments from his recurring dream, in which he looks up to see several Shadows hovering above Centauri Prime. Londo needs to take down this nut, and he enlists the help of Vir, the only person he can trust...since he seems to be the only person he hasn't seen corrupted by power, to help scheme to kill the Emperor.

And then lastly we find Sheridan, who somehow survived the fall and is underground on Z'ha'dum. He then meets a mysterious guy, who we can only suspect is going to help Sheridan get out somehow, or at least eventually explain why he lived.

It is a big opener for the season that sets the scene and shows us where most everybody stands after the previous season ended so explosively. I think only Franklin and Marcus are sort of left out, because even though we didn't see Garibaldi, we at least know whats up with him...well that we know he is lost. This episode was structured the way i always felt this show should be structured...you got a bunch of characters and a bunch of arcs and storylines, why confine it to an A/B story structure? So many people could get lost in the shuffle in the first two seasons...things certainly faired better in Season 3, but this is the kind if structure this series needs...follow the threads of all these stories and characters, dont just drop a character for several episodes because you can only focus on two stories an episode.

At any rate, this was fine opener to the fourth season, and ready to see how things unfold from here.

NEXT TIME: G'Kar Captured
