The Narn-Centarui War

Story: The Coming of Shadows
Written By: J. Michael Straczynski
Season: 2

Major episode in the storyline of the show, "The Coming of Shadows" is the first real escalation of conflict in the series after a season and a half of hints and foreshadowing, finally something happens.  Not that I haven't enjoyed the build up, but there comes a time when you have to stop foreshadowing and start...shadowing.  And this episode certainly Shadows. Get it?
So the bubbling of conflict between the Narn and the Centauri comes to a head when G'Kar decides to assassinate the Cenauri Emperor during his visit to the station.  When the Emperor begins to die of a heart attack before G'Kar gets a chance, he has Dr. Franklin send G'Kar a message...an apology for their long and terrible history.  It changes G'Kar's opinion of the Centauri, and he even buys Londo a drink and hopes for future peace.  Unfortunately Londo has already set his plan of Narn Destruction in motion with his alliance with the Shadows.  And the Shadows destroy a huge outpost of the Narn...killing tons of Narn...and when Narn Relief efforts arrive, they find only Centauri ships.  War is declared, peace talks are at an end.

It's a great episode that really kicks the series into high gear.  I've been enjoying my viewing of it, particularly this second season, but man this episode showed just how much some action needed to happen. I like that it took it's time getting to this moment, and it made it all the more effective, but I really needed this show to start doing something rather than talking about something that might eventually happen.

The cameo appearance of Sinclair was also a nice touch.  His character just sort of disappearing off-screen seemed awkward, but having him show up, however briefly, really helped tie his whole randomly being assigned elsewhere thing up. It makes it seem like his disappearance wasn't entirely pointless.

All in all a really great episode that turned the tables on this show a bit.  Time for it to really get going with it's long running story arcs.

NEXT TIME: Franklin's Dad
