Story: The Long Night
Written By: J. Michael Straczynski
Season: 4
Apparently I was right, Londo did convince the Emperor to go to Narn. Londo and Vir and some other Centarui are also there, with G’Kar’s public execution imminent...Londo and several Centauri scheme to use the time of G’Kar’s execution as the time to finally take out Cartagia. Vir gets Londo a weapon that quickly injects a poison into the victim and should kill them almost instantly. G’Kar is paraded around before he gets to the Emperor, where he is to be killed. He then breaks his chains and starts attacking guards, Londo takes the Emperor away for “safety” where he will fionally commit the deed...but things go awry. The empror hits Londo because he is nuttypants and Londo loses the weapon (Cartagia didn’t even know about the weapon he is just a psychopath) Londo is trying to fight him off when Vir shows up and stabs him right in the chest. Down he goes and the mission is complete. Vir struggles with having to murder someone, but Londo talks him down, at least momentarily.
Londo then makes good on his promise. After the Emperor is confirmed dead, Londo tells the other Centauri to take it as a sign. Two emperors have died in dealings with Narn, they should leave this planet for good. They’ve had their revenge, time to leave them and avoid further issues. Narn is free of the Centauri at last. They leave, and they celebrate, and when G’Kar confronts some that are drinking and destroying the Centauri throne room replica...they make talks of making G’Kar their next leader and getting revenge on the Centauri. G’Kar just wants peace, and he certainly doesn’t wish to be the lone leader of the world, he wants to have things the way they were, with a group making decisions, not one man. The Narn question what hardships G’Kar faced during the occupation since he was offworld, he just laughs and walks away. I sure hope these people don’t continue war, choose peace dammit.
Now onto the other main storyline of the episode, which is on Babylon 5. The Vorlons have continued their use of their planet killer, but not the Shadows have unleashed their own planet killer on worlds, this one in the form of a Death Cloud. It’s equally scary stuff...these two races plan to obliterate the universe because they don’t like each other?
So Sheridan comes up with a plan to make them stop punishing other worlds for their hatred of one another, and to actually just FIGHT ONE ANOTHER. So he comes up with a plan that involves luring both to the same place to finally face each other, and hopefully destroy each other so the Universe can move on without them. This includes sending a Ranger named Ericsson and some White Stars to lure the Shadows on what is essentially a suicide mission. It is really unfortunate and sad that it has come to this, but it has.
Things end with Sheridan going all Star Trek on us and having a Captain’s Log, and he and everyone else in this war head off for what they hope will be the final confrontation of the Shadow War.
