Story: Dust to Dust
Written By: J. Michael Straczynski
Season: 3
Bester returns to the station in order to take down a drug kingpin known for selling a psychotropic drug known as Dust which can create some kind of telepathic high, and it sort of creates mind rape on the victim. Bester is, of course, not trusted by the B5 gang, and is given an injection so he can’t read their minds without their asking...you know since they are all involved in a conspiracy to take down the current government.
The fear is that Dust may be sold to an alien race to be used as a weapon, which in fact it is...to G’Kar. G’Kar wants to take down the Centauri with this drug, but he will need to test it first. So he takes the Dust and then heads to Mollari to learn his involvement in the war. He learns everything, but also has a spiritual revelation as well, with the assistance of Kosh (though G’Kar is probably unaware Kosh was involved).
G’Kar pleads guilty to assaulting Mollari and gets 60 days in the Babylon 5 prison, with his new spiritual outlook to guide him to his future path. Bester and Garibaldi are able to catch the Drug Kingpin and take him down before anymore Dust can be sold to aliens. When Bester leaves the station before his own drug holding back his powers can wear off, it is revealed (to the audience not anyone on the station) that PsiCorp created Dust to create telepaths, and that it didn’t really work.
It’s a decent episode with some good stuff. It isn’t the strongest episode of the season so far, but it was enjoyable enough.
NEXT TIME: Lt. Corwin
