Story: Points of Departure
Written By: J. Michael Straczynski
Season: 2
Eight days after the events of “Chrysalis”, Babylon 5 is in a state of change. Ivanova has been reluctantly in command since Sinclair was suddenly called away to Earth, Delenn is still in her cocoon, Garibaldi is in a coma after getting shot, but the biggest change is still to come. Ivanova finds out that Sinclair is not returning to the station.
Instead he is going to Minbar as an Ambassador, and is to be the first human to live on their planet in order to strengthen relations. Meanwhile Captain John Sheridan is coming to the station to take his place. This is a bit of a relief to Ivanova as she knows the man, but it may cause problems since his reputation from the war makes him not a perfect choice for the Minbari.
So a fringe group of Warrior Caste Minbari decide to attack the station, or at least a appear to in order to get Sheridan to react, fire first, and cause a new war, but luckily he figures out their plan and refuses to fire first...thus the attack ends up going nowhere. It’s a nice introduction to the series’ new lead character, as he is immediately cooler and more personable than Sinclair ever was in my opinion. I also like Bruce Boxleitner, not just because he comes off more human than O’Hare did, but also because he is FREAKIN TRON.
The episode itself continues the action packed but intelligent character driven storytelling that made the previous season’s finale so entertaining, and it excites me to think that this show is really going to go somewhere. A definitely exciting start to the season.
NEXT TIME: Sheridan’s Sister
