Reasons for the Attacks

Story: Movements of Fire and Shadow
Written By: J. Michael Straczynski
Season: 5

The war between the Centauri and the Alliance keeps ramping up, yet no one has really figured out what the Centauri strategy was, they were just hitting random targets with no real purpose it seems. Vir asks Lyta and Franklin to go to Drazi to find out what happened to the Centauri bodies that were in ships that were attacked by the Drazi.  Vir even pays Lyta’s much more expensive fee.  While there, they discover that there are no Centauri bodies...their is shadow technology.  Somehow the Regent may have been able to conduct this war with very few in the know about it, and just send these tech things in Centauri ships to blow random people up, purely to cause the very war they are now engaged in.
This news leads us right back to Centauri Prime where Londo is told by the Regent that he has sent all of the Centauri warships out on a false emergency, and turned off the planet defense grid...the people controlling him have now set up the planet to be destroyed by the fleet heading for the planet at this moment (despite Sheridan ordering the Narn and Drazi to NOT attack the planet, they’ve decided to do it anyways).  The episode ends with Sheridan racing to stop intercept them, but not making it there in time...because the Narn and Drazi start firing on the planet.

In a smaller story Delenn and Lennier are in a White Star heading towards Minbar to ask the Grey Council to agree to make a newer bigger class of White Star to take on their enemies (in a joint effort with Earth).  On the way, they encounter Centarui Ships and are attacks.  Most of the crew is dead, but Delenn and Lennier are among the survivors, but they are adrift.

Great episode in which yet another shoe drops and things look quite bleak for Londo and the Centauri at the end.  It looks as if that future we had seen in which Emperor Londo presides over a burning planet is coming to pass.  Not much time left in the story of the last of the Babylon stations, where will the final five episodes take us.
