Excalibur

Story: War Zone
Written By: J. Michael Straczynski
Season: Crusade

The pilot to this Babylon 5 spin-off picks up where the TV Movie “A Call to Arms” left off.  Captain Matthew Gideon is assigned to take the Excalibur and team of Doctors and Scientists in order to search for a cure to the plague the Drakh left on Earth.  They have five years before the Plague will truly take full effect and kill the population of Earth, setting up a 5-year story plan that will never get fully satisfied.
So with Earth quarantined, Gideon, his former ship’s telepath first officer, a team of Doctor and scientists, and the thief Dureena from the TV movie set out on their mission.  They are also joined in the end by the Technomage Galen, also introduced in the TV movie.

As pilots go it does a decent enough job setting up the show, though I must admit my interest began to wane.  I’m a fan of Gary Cole from his comedic roles in things like Office Space, Harvey Birdman…and his no-nonsense rebellious character is clearly defined here.  Other characters are not nearly as defined.

It is unlikely this show will truly shape up for me, as it seems as though it may suffer from First season-itis, in which it struggles to truly find it’s characters and footing…and since it was supposed to be the start of a five year plan cut short halfway through its first season…I can’t see this being a truly satisfying experience, but I’m giving it a shot.
